Coaching - the National and Regional Picture

Hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, means that there has never been a more exciting time for sport and coaching in the UK. The recruitment and support of current and subsequent coaches at all levels is crucial if we are to create a sporting legacy that goes beyond the 2012 Games.

Nationally work is being undertaken by all key organisations involved in sport to develop a 'World Class Coaching Sytem', where skilled, active and qualified coaches can be supported and developed to support and guide the improvement of children, players and athletes at all stages of their development.

For more information on done on this work, which is being led by sports coach UK through the UK Coaching Framework, please see below

Work on the coaching agenda in the North West is very strong. Five County Sports Partnerships are working closely together with National Governing Bodies of Sport and other key partners, such as Skills Active and the National Skills Academy to ensure a strong, joined up approach is taken developing systems and accessing funding to benefit coaches in the North West. Work that has been undertaken to date has resulted in:

  • The development of 5-County Workforce Development Plans, outlining the commitment to coaching from each County Sports Partnership
  • The development of the Coaching NW Support Group, which aims to support the 'Right Coach', to be in the 'Right Place' at the 'Right time', and adopt a coach centred approach to developing coaching as a profession which is properly recognised and supported and rewarded.
  • The investment of £x into the region to support coaches develop their knowledge, skills and coaching qualifications over the next x years through the following programmes
